More heavy junta losses in Kawthoolei; 2 PDF women martyr themselves to protect comrades; brutality used to prepare for fake election.

The Karen army Cobra battalion announced casualty figures from the most recent battle in Kaw T’Ree township in Dooplaya District of Kawthoolei (Kawkareik township on Burmese maps), which took place at the end of December: 48 junta troops died including 2 Majors, and 61 others were wounded. One Karen soldier died and 17 were wounded. Two armored vehicles were destroyed and “a lot” of military equipment was captured by the Karen. (People's Spring) These casualties are not to be confused with the 90+ junta troops killed further south in Dooplaya at Xrotherpler (Payathonsu on Burmese maps) in early January.
Relentless junta aerial bombing of southern Dooplaya District after the loss of two camps has created a humanitarian crisis, forcing tens of thousands of villagers to seek shelter in the jungle. The bombing has destroyed homes and started blazes in villages. (Mizzima)
News just emerged of a 3-day battle in Beit-Tavoy District of Kawthoolei (Tanintharyi Region on Burmese maps). PDFs fired grenades into the junta police barracks at Pakari on the Dawei-Htee Khee road on Jan. 5, then fired on a foot column and supply train in a nearby village the next day, and then exchanged fire again on Jan. 7. The junta troops cremated and buried an unknown number of their dead comrades and evacuated some wounded; a PDF soldier was also killed in Saturday’s battle. (Khit Thit Media)
After bombing Dae Bu Noh in Mutraw District of Kawthoolei (Hpapun township on Burmese maps) on Jan. 7, junta jets went on to bomb a gold mining camp in Dwelo township, hitting shops, houses, and a clinic used by mine workers and killing 6 known civilians, with others still missing. (Mutraw News)
Five more junta troops fled their battalion while on guard duty in Yephyu township of Beit-Tavoy District, Kawthoolei (Tanintharyi Region on Burmese maps). Five new soldiers ran off the night of Jan. 4, and the next day they showed up at a monastery a few kilometers away to ask for food. A monk there called the military and had them recaptured. They are now being tortured at the Mawrawaddy naval base. (Ayeyarwaddy Times)
In Chin State, the junta is trying to bring in 100 reinforcement troops from Magway Region via Mindat town, sparking clashes with Chin defense forces. Junta jets are bombing along the road. Villages in the area all have bomb bunkers nowadays. (Mizzima)
In Mon State, a PDF in Ye township assassinated a junta police detective today who targeted Civi Disobedience strikers and Revolutionary forces. (Ayeyarwaddy Times)
Junta scorched earth village terrorism campaign---------------
Early yesterday morning PDFs bombed a bus carrying junta troops from Sagaing township toward Monywa; a few minutes later they set of 6 more bombs on 2 junta trucks carrying about 30 troops each. One truck was disabled. An hour later more bombs damaged a 3rd junta truck; the troops were then on foot, and were hit with more bombs. The junta sent another truck from Monywa to pick up the stranded troops, and sent mechanics to repair the damaged truck. The PDFs bombed those mechanics with a drone, but the troops then shot down the drone. About 15 troops were killed and 10 wounded; there were no PDF casualties. (People's Spring)
The junta is using jets and helicopters to bomb villages on the banks of the Irrawaddy River in Bhamo township of Kachin State, in an effort to depopulate the area to protect its supply boats. (People's Spring)
Troops are burning Aleidaw village of Htee Chaing township in Sagaing Region today. This is the 2nd time; Aleidaw was burned in December also. (Khit Thit Media)
The junta kidnapped 9 young teenagers riding in a car in Pakokku township yesterday and accused them of belonging to the Myaing PDF. Pictures published on junta propaganda outlets show the kids with blood stains, swollen and disfigured faces, and urine-soaked trousers, indicating that they have been tortured. (Myaelatt Athan)
People’s Defense Forces (PDFs)-----------------
Yesterday we reported a battle at the Kandaung police barracks in Palay township of Sagaing Region, but the outcome was still unknown. Today reports say that PDFs from several townships – Palay, Myaing, Salingyi, Pauk – jointly killed about 30 junta troops and were on the point of occupying the barracks when helicopters showed up with 50 reinforcements and sprayed the area with machine gun fire. The PDFs retreated for their safety.
An exploding roadside bomb blew up a junta truck’s fuel tank and caused it to crash into another junta vehicle this morning. In the confusion, junta troops fired at each other; 2 were killed. (People's Spring)
It is confirmed that the 2 women caught with a bomb in Kawlin township yesterday detonated the mine on purpose when they were caught by junta troops, to avoid being captured and tortured for information about their colleagues. Two troops are thought to be injured by the explosion. (Mizzima)
Urban warfare------------------
An urban PDF fired grenades at a junta bunker at a street intersection this morning in Mingaladon township. The troops responded by shooting their guns a lot, injuring a civilian.
In Mandalay, a bar patronized by junta troops was bombed yesterday. The explosion started a fire. (Khit Thit Media)
Political and economic-------------------
A political prisoner was beaten to death in Insein Prison in Yangon on Jan. 5, sparking a riot by other prisoners. Junta guards shot dead another prisoner and beat and tortured others while suppressing the uprising. (Khit Thit Media) Junta troops are also kidnapping raw jade prospectors and destroying their equipment in Kachin State, after the prospectors stopped making payments to the junta. (People's Spring)
Junta troops are forcing their way into homes at gunpoint in Yangon, Pakokku, and elsewhere to collect census data to use in the fake election. (Khit Thit Media) In case there was any doubt about the possibility of fair election, the junta imprisoned 4 duly elected 2020 parliamentary representatives from Minbu, Pwint Phyu, and Chauk townships yesterday.
