Resistance strikes junta fuel supply; Karen & Arakan armies battle the regime; President Biden to discuss Burma situation with ASEAN.
Breaking News: An oil tanker ship exploded and burned in the Yangon harbor this afternoon. Sources say the oil was destined for the junta military. As of this evening the fire is still out of control. (Khit Thit Media) There is no mention of the cause, but the fuel supply is one of the strategic underpinnings of the regime that the organized resistance has wanted to target for a long time.
Ethnic regions-------------------
In Doo Tha Htoo District of Kawthoolei (Thaton township on Burmese maps), a junta squad that had been illegally detaining citizens was itself detained by a local defense force this morning. The detained citizens were rescued and the 3 junta soldiers including a major were killed, and their weapons were confiscated by the PDF. Another soldier escaped with a wound. This same gang had burned local villages and kidnapped political activists, and had smuggled cars stolen from the public. (Khit Thit Media)
In Dooplaya District of Kawthoolei (Myawaddy township on Burmese maps), the Karen army Cobra battalion attacked 150 junta troops who were trying to invade the Thay Baw Bo area on the Myawaddy-Waw Lay road yesterday. There was an exchange of mortar fire; no Karen soldiers were wounded, and junta casualties aren’t known yet. (Cobra Column) Today the junta responded with helicopter airstrikes and jet bombing. (Khit Thit Media)
Meanwhile fighting continued in Beit-Tavoy District of Kawthoolei (Tanintharyi Region on Burmese maps), with another battle yesterday in Palaw township in which 3 junta troops were killed by a local PDF. About 30 troops had come to clear the road of bombs for a convoy to pass, and the PDF got advance information of their approach and ambushed them. Also, junta troops kidnapped the father of a PDF soldier along with another man in Jetsabyin village 2 days ago, and then dumped the father’s dead body on a roadside yesterday. (Mizzima)
The Arakan Army fought 5 battles yesterday against junta troops in Minbya, Maungdaw, Ann, and Paletwa townships; a total of 10 junta troops were killed and some weapons were captured. One battle involved an attack on a junta warship in the Kaladan River. (People's Spring)
Today a battle is ongoing in Ponnah Kyun township after the Arakan Army intercepted a junta food supply truck and took all the food. The junta has brought in jets, and gunfire continues. (The Irrawaddy)
In Karenni area, junta troops launched a terrorist attack on a refugee camp at La Ee village in Pekhon township yesterday (southern Shan State on Burmese maps). Four civilians suffered injuries from mortar fire, including an 8-year-old child and an 88-year-old woman; a man is in critical condition. (Khit Thit Media)
Junta army desertions------------------
A junta army officer in Namkham in northern Shan State defected to a local PDF. As an officer he didn’t have a rifle, but brought grenades and ammunition with him. (People's Spring)
Another junta soldier was captured by a PDF as he stumbled drunkenly away from his barracks in Sagaing township yesterday. He put up a fight but was subdued. (Khit Thit Media) Junta troops have to remain in the safety of their camps; if they venture elsewhere, they are subject to sniper fire and capture.
Junta scorched earth village terrorism campaign---------------
During the terrorist assault on Pya village yesterday in Mandalay Region, junta troops looted homes and then torched 300 of them, and murdered a civilian. Locals say there was no PDF or fighting, and that the assault was completely unprovoked.
Several thousand people left homeless by the junta’s destruction of villages during the past week in Myaung township, Sagaing Region are suffering from seasonal cold weather, as well as food and medicine shortage. (Myaelatt Athan)
People’s Defense Forces (PDFs)-----------------
In Sagaing Region, a PDF in Tantse township engaged a junta column for an hour yesterday in Pekingyi village after the troops broke in and looted homes. Unconfirmed reports say at least 3 junta troops were killed, and a PDF soldier received a non-life-threatening wound. (People's Spring)
A PDF bombing in Shwebo township yesterday killed a Pyu Saw Htee terrorist leader and wounded 3 troops in one of their camps. In Myaung town, another PDF opened fire on drunken, rowdy junta troops last night, killing 1 and wounding 2.
A PDF in Monywa township of Sagaing Region executed a man who had been digging up and removing landmines set by the PDF for junta troops on the Monywa-Mandalay highway, and reporting them to the junta. The same man had been caught before and warned, so this time he was killed. (Mizzima)
Urban warfare------------------
In Yangon, two bombs went off last night in Insein township, one at a junta admin office and the other at staff quarters. They were placed by an urban PDF. Another bomb was found and neutralized in Thaketa township. (Khit Thit Media)
Political & economic-------------------
Junta officials have ordered farmers in 26 townships of Irrawaddy Region to plant sunflowers instead of rice – otherwise the regime will steal the farmers’ land and kick them off. (Ayeyarwaddy Times) The Irrawaddy Delta is one of Burma’s main rice basket areas, but the junta wants sunflower seed that it can export to earn scarce foreign currency, and it does everything by force and threats.
USA President Joe Biden is now expected to appear at the ASEAN summit meeting that starts today in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, where he will emphasize the Burma security situation. China and Russia will only be represented by high-level diplomatic delegations.
