Burma coup resistance notes October 15, 2022
Ethnic regions-------------------
In Karenni area, junta troops in Mobye opened fire on passers-by on a road yesterday for no apparent reason. They injured a civilian on a motorcycle, who was then stranded under the live fire. Karenni defense forces approached, fired back, and rescued the wounded civilian. Meanwhile, a 7th political prisoner has been murdered in junta custody in the Loikaw prison; some died under torture, but this young man was killed yesterday by denial of medical care. (People's Spring)
In Doo Tha Htoo District of Kawthoolei (Kyaikto township on Burmese maps), a security camera video has come to light that clearly shows junta troops shooting a mother in the head as well as other civilians on Oct. 12 at the Kyaiktiyo pagoda. After a PDF group fired on the troops, the troops turned and shot 3 women dead, including one who was holding her little boy by the hand, and injured 13 others. In the video, another woman quickly grabbed the boy and carried him to safety. (People's Spring) The junta is suing two press outlets, BBC-Burmese and The Irrawaddy, for reporting what happened; it is trying to blame the civilian deaths on the PDF. Though the junta is guaranteed to get a favorable verdict in its kangaroo courts, these press outlets are completely beyond its reach. (Khit Thit Media)
In another reaction to the embarrassment at Kyaiktiyo Pagoda, the junta shipped in more troops from Waw in the west and Myawaddy in the east. Yesterday a 24-vehicle convoy came from the direction of Hpa-an and Myawaddy, but was attacked by the Karen army before it could arrive. The Karen and allied PDF blew up 2 pickup trucks of the convoy; one was completely destroyed, along with the 6 troops inside. The other casualties haven’t been quantified.
Then today the same police post at Kyaiktiyo was drone-bombed, and the troops began shooting wildly again. All civilians fled the area. Casualties from today’s drone attack aren’t reported yet. (Myaelatt Athan)
The Kachin army fired on a junta bridge checkpoint in Chipwi township this morning, killing 2 troops and wounding 1.
Junta army desertions------------------
Two junta police from the Monywa battalion defected to the Yinmapin PDF a month ago with full weapons, but couldn’t be disclosed until now out of safety concerns. During that month they have been fighting alongside the PDF.
Junta scorched earth village terrorism campaign---------------
Eighty troops attacked Dantai village at dawn his morning in Butalin township in Sagaing Region, causing panic and provoking a sudden flight of residents. A local PDF assisted the elderly to get out, but an old woman died of a heart attack and 2 PDF soldiers were killed by junta gunfire as they were helping, and another was wounded.
Also today, in Chaung Oo township, troops attacked the civilian villages of Hmancho, Sinmye, and Mateethah with mortars and rifle fire. A woman is gravely injured. (Khit Thit Media)
People’s Defense Forces (PDFs)-----------------
In Sagaing Region, a PDF in Monywa township hit 2 junta military boats with rocket-propelled grenades in the Chindwin River yesterday; a video shows a rocket striking one of the boats at the waterline, but damage isn’t known. Earlier, 2 troops aboard the boats were killed by PDF fire from the riverbanks. (People's Spring) Another Monywa PDF blew up a military truck yesterday, killing 8 troops.
In Khin Oo town, combined PDFs drone-bombed junta targets in the town center, including the junta commander’s office and a military post at the central statue. Meanwhile in Myinmu township a PDF drone dropped a bomb among 7 troops guarding the local branch of Myanma Economic Bank yesterday, causing some casualties. The troops then turned on a jammer, causing the PDF to lose control of the drone, and it crashed. (Myaelatt Athan)
Elephants have been carrying supplies for PDFs in Yinmapin township during the rainy season when roads get too muddy for vehicles. The elephants are from Alaung Taw Kathapa National Park, where park staff have joined the Civil Disobedience Movement and are assisting with the war effort behind the scenes. The elephants are not brought into conflict zones. (Mizzima)
In Magway city, the chief of junta traffic police, responsible for harassing and extorting motorists and shooting youths riding motorcycles, was assassinated in his office last night. (Khit Thit Media) A hit in such a central location points out that junta personnel are not safe anywhere now.
Urban warfare------------------
In Yangon last night a PDF fired three 107mm shock missiles into the junta’s aircraft repair facility at Mingaladon airport, targeting the headquarters. Where they got these missiles isn’t revealed. (Khit Thit Media)
