Burma coup resistance notes October 29, 2022
Karen army scores again in Dooplaya District; junta troops subjecting Sagaing villagers to horrific torture and killing; junta army defections accelerate.
The Karen army Brigade 6 continues to roll up the junta in Dooplaya District. Last night it took over the police barracks at Kyaikdon in Kaw T’Ree (Kawkareik) township. The fighting was all over in half an hour and only 1 person was killed, a junta police. The Karen captured a quantity of guns, ammunition, and grenades. The report doesn’t mention what happened to the other junta personnel, whether they were captured or ran away soon after the shooting started. (Kawthoolei government information service)
Horrific torture on a mass scale is taking place in Natmauk township of Magway Region. Over 100 villager men were kidnapped by junta troops from Patawye village 10 days ago, and have been starved, tortured, and interrogated since then. Three men were tortured to death so far. This is in retaliation for an Oct. 16 attack in which a PDF killed 4 junta troops and captured 2 guns. The 80 or so troops are furious and are demanding the 2 guns back from the 100+ victims, who don’t have them. (The Irrawaddy)
Ethnic regions-------------------
Intense fighting is reported in Karenni area between Mobye and Loikaw, starting Oct. 26 and continuing through yesterday. One Karenni soldier has been killed and 3 wounded, while junta casualties aren’t yet reported. Villagers in that area have fled due to heavy junta shelling. (People's Spring)
In Beit-Tavoy District of Kawthoolei (Tanintharyi Region on Burmese maps), a PDF twice attacked a 12-vehicle junta convoy yesterday, damaging 2 of the vehicles. The junta posted sentries around these vehicles, and later the same day the PDF opened fire on them. The PDF estimates 10 junta casualties, of which 2 are confirmed dead. (People's Spring) Meanwhile, PDFs assassinated 3 dalans (junta spies) in Launglone township over the past 3 days. The PDFs aim to make it dangerous to by a dalan, local administrator, or other type of junta supporter. (Myaelatt Athan)
Another incident is now reported in Dooplaya District of Kawthoolei: Karen soldiers fired on junta troops at 2 checkpoints on the Asia Highway on Oct. 26, where they were extorting motorists. Three troops were killed and 4 weapons were captured by the Karen.
Chin defense forces have been doxing or ‘outing’ non-CDM (i.e. junta collaborationist) government staff in Chin State. Today they published a roster of those working for the junta in Mindat town; previously they did the same for Hakha town. (Khit Thit Media)
Junta army desertions------------------
In Dooplaya District of Kawthoolei (Kawkareik township on Burmese maps), besides the capture of the Kyaikdon police barracks mentioned above, 5 junta soldiers snuck across the front lines and joined the Karen forces in recent days. They are being given their first solid meals in a long time and civilian clothes, and will be offered refuge in liberated territory. (Khit Thit Media) The Kawthoolei government (KNU) says nearly 200 junta troops have surrendered in its territory since the coup, including 90 in Dooplaya District alone; the numbers indicate that this trend is accelerating. Between the defectors and deserters from the junta army, and the number who surrender or run away rather than fight, and those killed and wounded, the junta’s ranks seem to be collapsing in Dooplaya, requiring the generals to keep shipping in more troops from elsewhere.
Another junta soldier escaped on Oct. 22 and has now reached safety with Karenni defense forces in Pekhon township of Karenni area (southern Shan State on Burmese maps).
Junta scorched earth village terrorism campaign---------------
About 50 troops burned 2 villages in Yesagyo township of Magway Region today, destroying nearly 300 homes in Saithay and Thanpya. Nearby PDFs are attempting to defend the area and help residents to reach safety. (Myaelatt Athan)
People’s Defense Forces (PDFs)-----------------
In Sagaing Region, about 200 junta troops arrived at 5 a.m. yesterday at a PDF camp in Myaung township, but were spotted by the camp’s sentries, and the PDFs fought back. The troops fired mortars and helicopters arrived, forcing the PDFs to abandon the camp. They lost motorcycles, phones, and ammunition, but say they killed almost 20 troops before fleeing. The junta troops left again at 9 a.m. (Myaelatt Athan)
PDFs fired 80mm and 120mm (large) locally-manufactured mortars at the junta police barracks and admin offices in Salingyi town yesterday. The mortars were able to hit their targets, and 3 junta operatives were killed. (Ayeyarwaddy Times)
A PDF in Myinmu blew up 5 junta soldiers who were guarding a junta-owned Myanma Commercial Bank branch there; 4 were killed on the spot and the other wounded.
PDFs fired grenades at a junta/Pyu Saw Htee patrol coming out of the Zee Phyu Kone Pyu Saw Htee camp yesterday, killing 2 troops and 3 Pyu Saw Htee terrorists. The PDFs were then able to withdraw unharmed. (Mizzima)
In Mandalay Region, a PDF in Myinchan township opened fire on troops who were returning from a gambling den in Myedaing, Ngazun township yesterday, killing 5 of them. (Myaelatt Athan)
Urban warfare------------------
In Yangon, an urban PDF caused an explosion yesterday at a junta bunker at the Padoma Park in Sanchaung township where the regime is preparing a fake market fair. (Mizzima)
Civil Disobedience Movement (CDM)-------------------
A leading Buddhist monk in the Thai border area who was a vocal critic of the military coup, Baddanta Ariya Wuntha Bi Wuntha, died suddenly of cardiac arrest in Mae Sot, just outside of Kawthoolei in Thailand. The Sayadaw (bishop) was a booster of the resistance movement and is being widely honored in the border area following his life’s end. (Khit Thit Media)
