Burma coup resistance notes September 20, 2022
People’s Defense Forces in central Burma continued whittling down the shrinking junta army and making the troops unsafe everywhere.
Ethnic regions-------------------
In Karenni area, junta forces continued their mortar bombardment of Mobye town yesterday. On the ground, a column of about 500 junta troops with armored vehicles and food supply trucks was attacked by Karenni defense forces for 10 hours. Two Karenni fighters were killed and 1 seriously wounded by junta mortar fire, and the number of junta casualties is unknown. In Phekon town, the junta police command center was attacked with rocket and gunfire by Karenni defense force members in a boat on the lake yesterday; the junta responded by firing mortars into the surrounding residential areas, damaging some houses. (People's Spring)
Likewise in Kawthoolei (Karen nation) Dooplaya District (Myawaddy township on Burmese maps), the junta continues firing mortars ineffectually in the direction of Karen army Cobra troops guarding Lay Kay Kaw and Three-story Bend on the Myawaddy-Waw Lay road. For it’s part, the Karen army and its partner the Federal Wings drone-bombing unit continue to blast junta troops from the sky. Yesterday the Cobras again repulsed a junta attack with an unknown number of casualties among the junta troops. (People's Spring) Karen army Brigade 5 in Mutraw District (Hpapun township on Burmese maps) is reporting the defection of 2 more junta soldiers with full weapons.
In Kawthoolei Beit-Tavoy District (Tanintharyi Region on Burmese maps), a PDF in Palaw township bombed a 3-vehicle junta convoy today, burning and destroying one of the trucks. A gun battle followed. Casualty figures aren’t available. (Mizzima)
In Arakan State, the Arakan Army has been targeting junta boat traffic with devastating effects. Yesterday it seized 2 boats transporting weapons and food for junta troops in Kyaukdaw township on the Kalatan River; they were commandeered civilian boats with 8 troops aboard. The same day another supply boat tried to sail up the Kalatan River toward Paletwa in southern Chin State and ran into intense rocket and gunfire from the Arakan Army on both banks in Kyauktaw township. The boat fired back, but had to retreat. On Sept. 16 a junta troop transport boat was intercepted by the AA at Taungkot harbor. (Myaelatt Athan) This is part of a larger strategy by the AA to cut junta supply routes and starve out the occupation troops.
In Shan State, the northern Shan army SSPP fought a fierce battle today against 70 junta troops near Wan Ong village of Momeik township. No outcome is reported yet. (Than Lwin Khet News)
In Chin State, Chin defense forces attacked a junta checkpoint at the entrance to Matupi town yesterday, killing 6 troops and wounding 8. They say the troops had been harassing travelers, beating some, preventing people from getting to the hospital, and otherwise persecuting the population. (Ayeyarwaddy Times)
Junta scorched earth village terrorism campaign---------------
In Butalin township of Sagaing Region yesterday, a junta terror gang attacked a Buddhist monastery in Auntha village where civilians were sheltering from the violence, killing one of them and driving out the rest, then burning the monastery and all of the people’s motorcycles and cars, as well as the houses of the village. (Khit Thit Media)
In Palay township of Sagaing Region, junta troops burned down Mwenton village again, for the 3rd time. There wasn’t a lot to burn this time. (Mizzima)
People’s Defense Forces (PDFs)-----------------
In Sagaing Region, a PDF coalition repeatedly blew up a column of 50 marching junta troops throughout the day yesterday in Yinmapin township, killing about half of them, according to the PDFs. Video footage shows that each attack involves multiple bombs spaced along a road where troops are marching, and detonated simultaneously, taking out a number of them. In the same township, 30 members of a junta/Pyu Saw Htee terrorism gang who left their base in Bantbwe village were attacked, but other than one leader who was killed, casualties aren’t known. (Khit Thit Media)
In Khin Oo township yesterday, a local PDF placed landmines ahead of a junta column in 8 different locations, ultimately killing 12 and wounding 7. One PDF fighter was killed and a civilian woman was injured by junta return fire. (Khit Thit Media)
In Myaung township, a junta police chief in Kyauk Yit village challenged PDFs to try and drone bomb his barracks, because he has a signal jammer. Yesterday 4 PDFs managed to bomb the police barracks anyway, injuring at least 3 people. (People's Spring)
A PDF in Tantse township of Sagaing Region says it bombed a convoy of 150 junta troops yesterday in Kyunlei village, killing about 15 of them. In Thabeikkyin township of Mandalay Region, PDF members shot and killed 3 junta military personnel including a platoon commander yesterday, and captured a small quantity of weapons and ammunition. (People's Spring)
Another Tantse township PDF opened fire on 40 troops at a junta road checkpoint on the edge of Tantse town yesterday, killing 5 of them and wounding 3. (Khit Thit Media)
Update on yesterday’s multi-PDF attack on the junta police station in Ma Sein village of Kalaywa township in Sagaing Region: Now 9 police are known to have died (up from 4 yesterday), and a local woman was injured by stray gunfire. The remaining police ran away, and the PDFs captured a number of weapons. (Khit Thit Media)
In Magway Region, PDFs got advance information about a meeting in Myaing township, Thayetkan village 2 days ago on Sept. 18 between junta officers and pro-junta Pyu Saw Htee thugs. They bombarded the meeting with locally-made 40mm, 60mm, and 120mm mortars, killing 2 Pyu Saw Htee and injuring an unknown number. The next day, yesterday, they again attacked Pyu Saw Htee with landmines, killing 2 more. (People's Spring) The Pyu Saw Htee terror squads assist the junta in looting and destroying villages and killing civilians.
Urban warfare------------------
In Yangon, an urban PDF bombed a junta police station in Myangone township last night. Urban guerrillas bombed a building in Shwepyitha township where junta troops are camped, and explosions were heard in North and South Dagon townships. (Khit Thit Media) An urban PDF opened fire on a junta patrol and attacked it with mines yesterday in Mingaladon township. (People's Spring)
Also in Yangon Region, a bomb exploded today inside the junta administration offices of Kayan township, causing unknown casualties; numerous emergency vehicles have been coming and going since the explosion. (Ayeyarwaddy Times)
Civil Disobedience Movement (CDM)-------------------
The National Unity Government published the names of 15 junta air force pilots along with their addresses and social media identities, saying these are some of the people responsible for bombing and killing civilians such as the 7 school children and 6 adults murdered in Letyetkone, Sagaing Region. The out-ing of the pilots implicitly invites and enables PDF attacks on them personally. That would reduce the junta’s airborne terror capacity. (Than Lwin Times)
The junta has transferred some political prisoners from Monywa to Myinchan prison, where they are being beaten and tortured. Kicking in the face and torso with military boots is a common method, causing injury and disfigurement. Protest leader Ko Zin Min Htet, who was captured last year by a junta car running him down on his motorcycle, is reported to be in a coma from the physical abuse. (People's Spring)
