Burma coup resistance notes September 28, 2022
Karen army captures another camp; Karenni defense inflicts junta casualties; bombings rock Yangon.
The Karen army captured another junta camp today in southern Dooplaya District. Karen Brigade 6 troops and allied PDF stormed the junta’s Payadaung (Pagoda Hill) army base in Noh Ta Kaw township near Payathonsu, killing 11 enemy troops including the deputy commander, and capturing rifles and mortars. It was a small camp, but had been harassing local Karen citizens, so its removal was necessary. (People’s Spring, Khit Thit Media) The Karen, Arakan, and Kachin ethnic armies have been systematically eliminating junta positions in their national areas since the coup.
Ethnic regions-------------------
In Karenni State, Karenni defense force snipers using long-range rifles killed 7 junta troops yesterday on the Kayanthaya road outside Loikaw town. The troops responded with mortar fire in the general direction of the snipers, but without any success. (Mizzima)
Results are in from the Karenni/Kayan attack on junta troops in Konetha village of Demawso township, reported 2 days ago Sept. 26. In that battle 15 junta troops were killed including a lieutenant colonel who was the battalion commander. During the 90-minute battle, enemy troops fired 40 large-caliber 120mm mortars, so the Karenni/Kayan forces had to retreat to avoid casualties. (Khit Thit Media)
In Kawthoolei (Karen nation), the junta is denying the right to retire to aging officers of its local proxy militia, the BGF. It’s another indication of the junta’s deepening personnel crisis, as its fighting force becomes hollowed out by troop losses to death, injury, and desertion, and few new recruits agree to join. (The Irrawaddy)
In Chin State, the Director of the public hospital in Hpalam town, Dr Tluang Cung Thang, killed himself today rather than continue to work under the junta.
Junta scorched earth village terrorism campaign---------------
About 130 junta troops and Pyu Saw Htee thugs stormed the farming community of Tanaungdaw in Monywa township of Sagaing Region yesterday, then began burning the houses of the people and kidnapped 40 civilian hostages, especially youth who they think look like PDF members. (Than Lwin Khet News)
People’s Defense Forces (PDFs)-----------------
In Sagaing Region, a PDF in Chaung Oo township bombed a marching column of 40 junta troops 2 days ago Sept. 26; 3 were killed and 7 wounded. In Tamu township, fighting resumed yesterday as a local well-armed PDF ambushed a convoy, causing an unknown number of casualties. This was a day after the PDF killed about 20 troops with roadside bombs. (Mizzima)
In Mandalay Region, PDFs in Myinchan township have been hammering away at junta troops for the past 3 days with mortars and roadside and drone bombs. A drone bomb killed 4 troops/police at a police barracks on Sept. 25, then a drone killed a soldier at a river port; the next 2 days drones dropped bombs on troops in 3 villages, killing 3 and wounding 5. (Khit Thit Media)
Urban warfare------------------
In Yangon, an urban PDF fired a grenade at a police position in North Okalappa township yesterday, then another bomb went off at night. In Hlaing township someone dropped a grenade into a guard bunker in front of a junta electric company office; 2 troops inside were seriously wounded. “Disturbances” were registered in Kamayut and Mayangone townships, a bomb exploded in Thanlyin township, and gunfire was reported near Insein prison. (Khit Thit Media)
Civil Disobedience Movement (CDM)-------------------
Central committee members of a Yangon-based youth union and a Mandalay-based LGBT union “have been out of touch since September 26 and are believed to have been captured by the terrorist army,” according to a joint statement issued by the organizations. If true, they are likely being tortured at this moment in a regime prison. Both bodies have been active in supporting the pro-democracy movement. (Mizzima)
In a move reminiscent of the Ayatollahs of Iran, junta authorities in Dawei city issued an order regarding what kinds of clothes women are allowed to wear while riding motorbikes; no skirts, shorts, or dresses while riding. Some women have already been kidnapped by the illegitimate junta police for these “offenses”. (Ayeyarwaddy Times) Likewise, the current junta is censoring movies and TV programs again as under earlier military regimes. (Mizzima) The police state is shrinking geographically but becoming more tightly controlled where it still exists.
